Our Story: From NC Clay to Your Home Garden

The Struggle That Started It All

Our journey didn’t start in a factory; it started in the red clay of Efland, North Carolina. When we moved onto our five-acre property, we had big dreams of a thriving homestead. But we quickly hit a wall—literally. The native soil was too heavy and compacted for the garden we envisioned.

We knew raised beds were the answer, but the options on the market were a letdown:

  • Stone beds were beautiful but back-breaking to install and permanent.
  • Store-bought metal kits felt flimsy, looked out of place in a natural setting, and were a nightmare to assemble.

I knew there had to be a better way to build a garden.

Where it Started

From Propane Tank to Garden Bed

We all have that one spot in the yard—ours was a rusty propane tank surrounded by a neglected, overgrown stone border. My husband decided to "quickly" fix it by building a hand-stacked stone wall.

The Long Game

A Year in the Making

Most garden projects shouldn't have a "one-year anniversary" before the first seed is even planted. This stone bed took over twelve months of weekend labor to finally finish. While we loved the look, it was a wake-up call: we were spending all our time building a garden instead of actually growing one.

The Search for Speed

The Metal Experiment

After the stone project, we tried metal raised beds to save time. They were faster, but they came with a different kind of headache: hundreds of tiny screws and a frame that felt flimsy. The real test came after filling them with soil—the walls began to bow and lose their straight lines. It was another lesson learned: speed shouldn't come at the cost of structural integrity.

Behind the Scenes

More Than Just Gardens

As our passion for self-sufficiency grew, we realized we needed a way to grow year-round. Here is Will prepping the site for our greenhouse. This project reinforced our "build it once, build it right" philosophy. We took the same precision required for pouring a perfect concrete pad and applied it to the joinery and design of our Cedar Raised Bed kits.

The Greenhouse Project

Better by Design

With the greenhouse standing tall on its new foundation, we’ve moved on to the finishing touches: custom potting benches. From the stone walls to the greenhouse glass, every project on our homestead has taught us something new about durability and design—lessons we build into every cedar kit we ship to you.

The Dream in Action

Designed for the Daily Work

There is a specific kind of joy in using a piece of furniture you built yourself to grow the food that feeds your family. These finished potting benches are the heart of our greenhouse. They another step in our journey that lead to the creation of Crafted Cedar.

Born from the Storm, Built to Last

The "Aha!" moment came after a storm left us with several downed trees. I decided to use that cedar to build our first set of beds. The result was a revelation: the wood was naturally rot-resistant, stayed cool in the NC sun, and looked like it truly belonged on our land.

When friends and family started asking where they could get "the sturdy ones," Crafted Cedar was born.

Natural Durability

Cedar is nature’s "outdoor wood." It resists rot and pests for years without needing chemical maintenance.

Chemical-Free

Unlike pressure-treated wood, our cedar is 100% food-safe—perfect for your organic vegetables.

Easy Assembly

No complex tools or headaches. I’ve designed these to be simple to put together in minutes.
